Biographisches Stichwort
John Withals (oder Whithals), in London geboren und aufgewachsen, war vermutlich Lehrer. Er starb um das Jahr 1555.
Lewis Evans, von dem weder das Geburts- noch das Sterbejahr bekannt ist, wuchs in Monmouthshire auf, studierte in Oxford, vermutlich am Christ Church College, wo er die akademischen Grade eines B.A. (1554), M.A. (1557 und B.D. (1562) erlangte. Später ging er nach London, mußte aber fliehen, weil er für die katholische Sache eintrat. In Antwerpen übersetzte er Werke aus dem Lateinischen, kehrte dann nach London zurück, wo er verhaftet wurde. Er söhnte sich mit der Church of England aus und schrieb einige Bücher, in denen er die katholische Kirche scharf angriff. 1574 überarbeitet und ergänzte er das Wörterbuch von John Withals.
Abraham Fleming, um 1552 in London geboren, besuchte von 1570 an das College Peterhouse in Cambridge, wo er 1571 den Grad eines Bachelor erwarb. Er schlug dann die geistliche Laufbahn ein und leitete die Gemeinde St. Pancras in London. Fleming starb am 18. September 1607 während eines Besuchs bei seinem Bruder Samuel in Bottesford, Leicestershire.
Zu William Clerk liegen mir noch keine biographischen Angaben vor.
Das weitverbreitete Wörterbuch von John Withals war eines der ersten englisch-lateinischen Wörterbücher für Kinder. Die Einträge darin sind nicht alphabetisch, sondern nach Sachgebieten geordnet, gefolgt von einer alphabetischen Liste von Adjektiven. Der Titel hat sich immer einmal wieder geändert.
